The longest zipline in Hawaii

Two Kauai operators use the word "longest" in their marketing, and both can be right. It depends on whether you mean one line or a whole tour.

Search for Hawaii's longest zipline and you will find Koloa Zipline described as Kauai's longest zipline, and Outfitters Kauai's FlyLine described as Hawaii's longest. One is about the whole course, the other about a single ride.

Here is what each claim means, the numbers behind it, and which one to book if length is what you are after.

The quick answer

The longest single zipline in Hawaii is the FlyLine at Kipu Ranch on Kauai, over 4,000 feet in one run, according to its operator, Outfitters Kauai. Koloa Zipline has the longest zipline tour on Kauai: eight lines including three of the island's longest, ending on the Waita line, about half a mile (2,450 feet on its platform sign).

What is the longest single zipline in Hawaii?

The FlyLine at Kipu Ranch, near Lihue on Kauai: over 4,000 feet, about three quarters of a mile, in one continuous ride.

Outfitters Kauai bills it as Hawaii's longest single zipline. You fly head-first in a Superman-style harness, and two parallel cables let you race a friend side by side. It is the finale of the AdrenaLine and Nui tours and can also be booked alone, direct.

How long is the longest line at Koloa Zipline?

About half a mile: the Waita line, Line 8, is 2,450 feet long and 102 feet high according to the sign on its platform.

It crosses Waita Reservoir, built in 1906 to water the Koloa cane fields, with the Haupu Range behind. The operator describes it as a half-mile line and one of three of the longest lines on Kauai.

So is Koloa Zipline the longest zipline in Kauai?

It is the longest zipline tour on Kauai, with eight lines; it is not the longest single line.

If you add up the ride time, Koloa gives you more of it than any other island tour, because it has the most lines. If you want one long, fast ride, the FlyLine wins.

How fast do you go?

Fast enough to feel it: the FlyLine operator quotes over 50 mph, and Koloa's longest lines are its fastest.

Speed depends on your weight and the wind, which is also why lighter riders are sometimes paired tandem. Guests on both courses describe the long lines as the highlight of the tour.

Which should you book if length matters most?

The AdrenaLine or Nui tour at Kipu Ranch, both of which end on the FlyLine.

AdrenaLine pairs it with a WaterZip into a swimming hole; Nui adds six lines in total and an open-truck ride across the ranch. Both are around $183 on Viator.

Are the longest lines scary?

They feel bigger than they are: the cable does the work, and by the last line most riders are relaxed.

Both courses build up to their longest ride, so you have practised on shorter lines first. For more on nerves and fitness, read the first-timer guide.
