The two questions first-timers ask most are whether it is scary and whether they are fit enough. The honest answers: less scary than you expect, and you need to be comfortable with uphill walks and steep steps.

We read hundreds of recent Viator reviews to see what surprised people. Here is what they said.

The quick answer

Most first-timers find Koloa Zipline more thrilling than scary: the course starts with an easier line, groups are capped at 12, and guides coach you at every platform. The harder part for some is the walking: there are uphill stretches and steep steps. It is not suitable for anyone with back or heart problems, recent surgery or pregnancy.

Is Koloa Zipline scary?

For most people, only for the first few seconds of the first line.

One first-time rider wrote that the guides were the perfect combination of fun and reassurance; another said any nerves were quickly resolved. The course starts easy so you get used to the gear before the long lines.

How high and how fast is it?

The Waita line runs 102 feet above the ground at its highest, by its platform sign, and the long lines are the fastest.

You never control the speed yourself: the cable, your weight and the wind decide it, and the guides manage the landings. Some guests even go upside down on a couple of lines, but that is optional.

How much walking is there?

Some: guests mention uphill hiking and a few steep steps, with short rests along the way.

One reviewer said they got a little winded but it was well worth it; another found little hiking because the lines are close together. Wear shoes with grip and take your time.

Who should not do Koloa Zipline?

Anyone pregnant, with back or heart problems, recent surgery in the last 6 months, over 280 lb, or who struggles with steep uphill walks.

The tour is not wheelchair accessible, and the Viator listing asks for a strong level of fitness. One Viator reviewer found the climbing too much and could not take part; the operator refunded them. If in doubt, call the office on 808-742-2734 before booking.

Is it safe?

Yes: groups are small, the guides handle the clipping, and guests consistently describe a strong safety focus.

Every tour starts with ground school, and you wear a full harness and helmet. Reviewers often name their guides and mention feeling safe even in the rain.

What if I freeze on a platform?

Tell your guide: they talk nervous riders through it, and lighter or anxious riders can sometimes ride tandem.

It helps to watch a few people go first. Many first-timers say the second line is when it clicks.

Is there an easier option?

If walking is the worry, a Poipu e-bike tour or a Na Pali boat trip gives you the views with far less effort.

If you want ziplining but a shorter morning, the AdrenaLine tour at Kipu Ranch has fewer lines, though guests there also mention muddy trails.
